Biomolecular Discovery Research Centre
DEVELOPING, IMPROVING AND APPLYING BIOMOLECULAR ANALYSIS TO LIVING SYSTEMS TO HELP CURE DISEASE, PRODUCE BETTER FOOD AND ADAPT TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE.
The MQ Biomolecular Discovery Research Centre (BDRC) brings together diverse innovative approaches to the study of biological problems using biomolecular analytical technologies. Today's ‘Omics' tools of genomics, proteomics, glycomics and bioinformatics are internationally recognised strengths of Centre members, allowing rapid discovery and analysis across a broad range of life-science applications.
We have consolidated our research streams into a systems biology approach, which recognises that an organism must be viewed as an integrated network of genes, proteins, protein modifications, metabolites and biochemical reactions. Our research aims to increase the understanding of the molecular diversity and networks driving living organisms: to discover new ways to cure disease, produce better food and adapt to environmental change.
Meet BDRC Director Professor Anwar Sunna with an introduction to the Centre below:
The MQ Biomolecular Discovery Research Centre (BDRC) is the culmination of a strong history of collaboration and funding success across biomolecular sciences at Macquarie University. It builds on the solid foundations and successes achieved by the MQ Biomolecular Discovery and Design Research Centre (BDDRC; 2017 - 2019) and BioMolecular Frontiers Research Centre (BMFRC; 2008 - 2016).
From 2017 to 2019, the BDDRC particularly contributed to the development of synthetic biology at Macquarie University leading to the recently secured ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology (CoESB).
In 2020 and beyond, the MQ Biomolecular Discovery Research Centre (BDRC) is expanding membership across MQ departments and faculties, and is establishing further interactions with key industry partners and government agencies, to secure funding for projects from both Australia and overseas sources.
With new members from the School of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), the BDRC is building collaborations in areas of nanobiomedicine, health and biomedical device research, and we are applying our “multi-omics” analysis skills to a range of biological questions in areas such as animal health and welfare, human health and medicine.

Our research
The Biomolecular Discovery Research Centre (BDRC) aims to bring together diverse innovative approaches to the study of biological problems, using biomolecular analytical technologies.
Our research uses Genomics, Proteomics, Glycomics, Metabolomics, Biomedical and Bioengineering approaches to serve a wide variety of specific research areas. These are underpinned by strong Bioinformatics and Statistics capabilities. The outcomes flow into applications in Science, Agriculture, Nano Technology and Medical Discovery.
